Το Summer in the City των Lovin’ Spoonful κυκλοφόρησε ως σινγκλ στις 4 Ιουλίου 1966 και ανέβηκε στο Νο1 του αμερικανικού πίνακα επιτυχιών στις 13 Αυγούστου 1966. Βρίσκεται στην 401η θέση της λίστας με τα 500 κορυφαία τραγούδια όλων των εποχών, που συνέταξε το μουσικό περιοδικό Rolling Stone το 2004.
To τραγούδι έγραψε ο Μαρκ Σεμπάστιαν αδερφός του αρχηγού του συγκροτήματος Τζον Σεμπάστιαν. Στην αρχή το 'χε γράψει ως ποίημα για να το στείλει για δημοσίευση σ' ένα λογοτεχνικό περιοδικό. Έπεσε στα χέρια του αδελφού του Τζον, έκαναν κάποιες αλλαγές στους στίχους και βγήκε το αποτέλεσμα.
Το τραγούδι αναφέρεται στην καλοκαιρινή θυρυβώδης Νέα Υόρκη και ακούγονται ήχοι από κομπρεσέρ, κόρνες αυτοκινήτων, με σκοπό να γίνει πιο ρεαλιστικό το σκηνικό.
Η Ελλάδα ''εμπλέκεται'' στο τραγούδι γιατί ο παραγωγός ήταν ο ελληνοαμερικανός μουσικοσυνθέτης και μέλος των Steam, Paul Leka (Παύλος Λέκας, 1943-2011), που κατάγονταν από τη Β. Ήπειρο.
Έχει ακουστεί σε πάρα πολλές κινηματογραφικές ταινίες, (η πρώτη ταινία ήταν του Βιμ Βέντερς Summer in the City, του 1970) τηλεοπτικές σειρές και διαφημιστικά σποτς.
